Instants: Fresh Faces, from Brazil to Detroit
In our new series “Instants,” the Proof staff brings you a snapshot of recent dispatches from the @natgeo Instagram feed. Follow us to experience more from National Geographic on Instagram.
We are always adding new photographers to the National Geographic family. Photographer Wayne Lawrence, who spoke at the National Geographic Photo Seminar in January, is a fresh face. Lawrence is best known for capturing the spirit and style of Orchard Beach through glowing portraits of the people who relax along the “Bronx Rivera.”
Lawrence spent the summer in Brazil photographing the city of Rio de Janiero during the World Cup. Since then, he has started a project for National Geographic magazine making portraits of Detroit’s residents. If the portraits are anything like Lawrence’s Orchard Beach photographs, they’re bound to be not only beautiful but intriguing.
Leaving New York City earlier today en route to Detroit, where I’ll be continuing a series of portraits for National Geographic of individuals who call this great American city home.

Branca Oliveira works as a steward at Maracanã Stadium. She and her family live in the neighborhood of Triagem on the periphery of Rio de Janeiro. “There is a very string security scheme for the World Cup. It’s a pity that it’s happening only due to this event and as soon as the World Cup ends, the level of security on the periphery will go back to zero.” —Branca de Oliveira, photographed at home with mother, Maria, sister Natasha, and daughter Tatiane, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 11, 2014.
